the master of disaster

Duane Peters has been a hero of mine since I was a kid, when I first started getting into skateboarding. It was the time of the bad ass vert kings. Gator, Lance Mountain, Christian Hosoi, Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, Mike McGill…some of the biggest names in skateboarding. These are the names which are indelibly linked to skateboarding in my mind. They graced the bottoms of some of the most classic decks in boarding. None of them were as amazing to watch as Duane Peters, though. And none of them combined skateboarding and punk rock like Duane did.

After a while, however, I stopped paying that much attention to skating, my subscription to Thrasher ran out and I only used my skateboard for transportation, not tricks. I still listened to punk, though, and eventually started listening to a lot of bands on Epitaph and their imprint, Hellcat Records, including the U.S. Bombs. The first U.S. Bombs song I heard was called Jaks and it was on a Hellcat comp called Give ‘Em The Boot. I had no idea Peters was the lead singer, but I really liked their music.

Eventually, I saw them on Warped Tour 98 and eventually figured out that the lead singer of the U.S. Bombs was the same Duane Peters I used to see in the pages of Thrasher back when I was a kid. (It turns out he’s a member of several other bands but I still listen to the Bombs the most.)

Recently Duane hit his knee during a demo in, of all places, Kansas(I was not in attendance) and fucked it up pretty bad. So bad, in fact, that he almost lost it. He details it in this blog entry and the following video:

Duane Peters Actions Realized

Of course, he has huge medical bills as a result of his accident and Real Skateboards and OJ Wheels have released special, limited edition products to benefit Duane Peters and help pay his medical bills. The art on the board was done by Lance Mountain, of all people. (I do wish the wheels and board matched a little better, but that’s just me.)

Duane has all sorts of other stuff, some pretty badass shoes from a company I’ve never heard of, called Draven (like The Crow?) He used to have shoes made by Vision Street Wear but I don’t know if they really sell shoes in the U.S. too much anymore, as I was having trouble tracking down a pair of black Suede-His. D.P. has several boards with the company Pocket Pistols and Santa Cruz has also reissued his old-school board from the 1980s.

DO WANT!

While Duane’s leg isn’t back to 100%, he is back skating, which is good news. Hopefully the Bombs will head out on a U.S. tour before too long as it’s been several years since I’ve seen them play. Hearing about Duane’s injury and looking up all sorts of old videos of him have convinced me to dig out my old board and see if I can still skate on my bum ankle…Peters almost lost his leg, surely I can still skate if he can.

You can follow Duane on Twitter at http://twitter.com/duanepeters, follow his blog at http://duanepeters.net/ and watch his awesome videos on YouTube at youtube.com/DPDisaster. (For the record, “Duane Peters Conspiracy Facts” are the best.) Also, the video Damage shows Peters destroying a pool and ramp back when he used to skate for THink and had far fewer tattoos…with a U.S. Bombs soundtrack, of course.

We get a lot of CDs sent to us at the station. As rock director I have to go through all of these CDs and determine which ones are good and which ones aren’t then add the good music to the station rotation. So, yeah, there are a lot of CDs on shelves in my office.

One day, as I was alphabetizing said CDs I came upon one from MC Lars. I listened to it, it was good, and one of the songs featured some guest artists: Beefy and Schaffer the Darklord. Something struck me about Schaffer, so I checked out hiswebsiteand listened to his stuff. I e-mailed him and asked for a promo CD. Manslaughter arrived shortly thereafter and the rest was history. I addedArrival of the Fittest to our rotation (edited, of course) and have been hoping to catch him on tour at some point soon.

In addition to his nerdcore stylings, Schaffer is also a member of a Sex Pistols cover band called God Save Queens and he makes a pretty damn good Johnny Rotten.

Here’s the video for The Rappist:

And here’s the video that was just released today for The Bender it is NSFW (not safe for work) (even the edited version.) Enjoy.
